KUALA
LUMPUR (April 18): Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Gobind Singh Deo said
that Malaysia is a country with a mature digital economy and the best choice
for information and communication technology (ICT) and digital companies across
the country.
He
said that in 23 years ago, Malaysia's goal was to create an economy based on
the technology of digital transformation.
“Our
first step was to create the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) in 1996; in 1997,
MDEC (formerly the Multimedia Development Agency, MDC) was created to lead and
promote the development of the digital economy in Malaysia.”
He
pointed out that the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) had a total investment of
RM330 billion from 1997 to 2018, and export sales of RM166 billion, which also
brought more than 180,000 jobs to the country.
He
said that 4,000 companies have obtained the status of MSC in Malaysia, with
local investment and foreign investment accounting for 74% and 26%
respectively, including 180 multinational companies.
"But
we are not satisfied with the status quo, and our country is still moving
forward in the technology and digital fields."

Gobind
Singh Deo said that Malaysia has embarked on the 5G field and is currently
developing a 5G implementation roadmap by the National 5G Working Group, which
was established last November. So far, there have been 110 participants. I hope
to see new capabilities, skills, business opportunities and a vibrant
ecosystem, and to promote the next phase of the digital economy in Malaysia.
The
Malaysia Technology Week in 2019 is from June 17th to June 21st in various
regions of Kuala Lumpur. It will bring together the best companies, ecosystem
partners, investors, regulators and technology start-ups in Malaysia as well as
representatives from around the world.
The
2019 Technology Week will create Malaysia's gateway to the ideal digital
destination and ASEAN, showcase innovative exhibitions on technology and
digital, provide business matching opportunities, market platforms and browse
the Malaysian ecosystem network. This event also provides experiential
participation, providing a rich networking opportunity for all participants.
On
the other hand, Gobind Singh Deo said at a press conference that the ministry
is exploring the roles of all relevant science and technology institutions to
avoid overlapping positions and services. He said that he will discuss with the
relevant departments and agencies involved.
He
said that this is to resolve the overlapping roles and roles of relevant
institutions, so as to avoid confusion among people in the field of science and
technology.
"I
have received complaints from many people because we have a lot of
organizations. They don't know which institution to consult. Of course, it is tiring
and cumbersome to negotiate with multiple agencies."
Gobind
Singh Deo was asked about the overlapping of institutional roles including the
Cradle Fund and Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC).
