KUALA
LUMPUR (May 26, 2019) -- Prime Minister Tun Mahathir said Pakat Harapan (PH)
government will work to strengthen the relationship between Malaysia and China
through closer and meaningful cooperation. He said that in recent years, the
two countries have not only achieved rapid growth in trade and investment
cooperation, but also created more cooperation opportunities in the fields of
tourism, science and technology, and cultural exchanges.
He
wrote a preface to the commemorative publication published by the
Malaysian-Chinese Friendship Association in cooperation with the 45th
anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and
China, stating that Malaysia will support China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative.
The Chinese Embassy will hold a conference on May 27th to celebrate the 45th
anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and
China.
Mahathir
also believes that although the leaders of Malaysia and China have changed in
the past few decades, the two sides have insisted on not interfering in each
other's internal affairs for many years, so that the two sides maintain a close
relationship.
Firmly believe in the principle of helping
neighbors create prosperity
“I have always believed in the principle of “helping your
neighbors create prosperity”; with the prosperity of China, it has also made
Malaysia prosperous.”
"These
benefits are shared and distributed among each other. For Malaysia, this
initiative is a trade relationship that began in the Malacca dynasty; trade
between Malaysia and China has not decreased over the centuries."
He
added that cooperation between the two countries has expanded to other levels from
the initial cooperation between the governments. Today, China has also become
Malaysia's largest trading partner, creating new milestones between the two
countries and cooperation.
"China
has made phenomenal growth in the past few decades and has become the world's
second largest economy. This has not only made China a great contribution in
Malaysia but also in other parts of the world."

Cooperation at all levels has grown
Mahathir
believes that cooperation between Malaysia and China has grown at all levels.
"I
believe that apart from the role played by the government and political
leaders, both the organizations and non-government groups, including the
Malaysia-China Friendship Association, have made great contributions to the
strong and positive relations of the two countries.
Mahathir
mentioned that he personally witnessed the memorandum of understanding signed
by the Malaysia-China Friendship Association in Beijing in June 1993.
Affirming the efforts of the Malaysia-China
Friendship Association
"I
would like to congratulate the Malaysian-Chinese Friendship Association for its
efforts over the years to maintain the friendship between the two countries and
even to enhance it to a higher level."
