O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea: Looking forward to strengthening cooperation with China

Recently, Papua New Guinea O'Neill accepted an interview with CCTV reporters. O'Neill said in an interview that he is very much looking forward to President Xi Jinping's visit and looks forward to further strengthening cooperation with China through this state visit and the APEC series of meetings.

O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea:   "He is responsible not only for China but also for countries all over the world. He (President Xi Jinping) has a balanced responsibility. He has a balanced solution to the challenges we face. He is reflecting leadership on the issue of climate change and advocating the maintenance of free trade in international trade are all firmly believed by Papua New Guinea. We firmly support President Xi Jinping."


Reporter: "You have been a prime minister for 7 years, and you have visited China 12 times during the period. Why do you value China's relationship so much?"

O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea: "China is a strong economy and has a lot of investment in Papua New Guinea. We have long-term and stable contacts with the Chinese people. You will find that PNG has a lot of resources, such as fisheries and agriculture, tourism and etc. What PNG lacks is capital and investment to develop these resources and find a market. There is a huge market for the resources we have in China, so I am very happy to know that Chinese investors are interested in PNG and start investing in it. I think the future in PNG is bright. ”




Reporter: "You know China very well, and then you must know that this year is the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up. Can you tell me when you first came to China?"

O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea: "At least 20 years ago."

Reporter: "Do you feel the tremendous development and changes in China over the years?"

O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea: "I will give you an example. The first time I went to Shenzhen was about 25 years ago. There were only about five high-rise buildings there. Now there are countless high-rise buildings. For the country and the people, China has obtained Amazing achievements; I think this is unrepeatable in human history. It is a good example for all developing countries to lift 600-700 million people out of poverty in such a short period of time."


Papua New Guinea is the first Pacific island country to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the “Belt and Road” construction with China. O'Neill has always believed that the “One Belt, One Road” initiative will bring real benefits to the countries.


O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea: "This is a great initiative for developing countries like Papua New Guinea. We can use this to find ways to acquire capital and find opportunities to develop infrastructure."

O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea: I hope to attract investment through APEC.

Papua New Guinea will host the APEC Leaders’ Informal Meeting for the first time. O'Neill said he hopes PNG will seize this historic opportunity and attract more economies to invest in PNG.

O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea: "The hosting of APEC will bring great opportunities to Papua New Guinea. You will find that our country will be understood by the surrounding areas. Our people will also know that the outside world is very big, and we can establish close ties with the outside world, finds opportunities and benefits from them."
