Establish a business in Malaysia must go through most important two steps. The first is the business registration at Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) and the second is local government or city council approval from Lesen Perniagaan / Majlis Perbandaran.

Step 1: Business Registration at Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM)

You need to register the company name with the relevant government department, which is Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM). If you want to establish a business, you need to register a private limited company (Sdn Bhd). You need to appoint a secretary company to help with the company registration, and Tannet Malaysia can provide professional services in this area. Basically, you can complete company registration in one to two weeks.

Step 2: Permit Registration at Local Government / City Council (Lesen Perniagaan/ Majlis Perbandaran)

Each district has a local government or city council to govern, so you need to know the actual store location where you want to establish a business. Establish a business requires approval from the local government or city council, otherwise there will be a fine conducted. This is a lot of trouble for new business owners because they need to provide a lot of documents to local government departments. The documents and forms required for each district are also different.

Step 3: Looking for the Fire Station

Every actual storefront needs to be approved by the Fire Department to ensure that the store is safe. Then you need to buy a fire extinguisher from the fire station, but you need to decide how many fire extinguishers you need based on the size of the store. Maintenance and service fees are required for fire extinguishers every year. Therefore, it is still recommended to ask the relevant departments what need to prepare. You can only run your business when get its approval.

Step 4: Inland Tax Bureau - Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN)

To establish a business, you need to be well prepared. Employers need to apply for a tax number at the Inland Tax Bureau. This is to facilitate annual tax returns and tax payments. If the tax return is delayed, the tax bureau will conduct a fine. All expenses and income must be recorded.
